In this picture you’ll see two young girls. If you look closely you might notice that the girl in front, Jessica, has something different about her. She was born with a disfigured arm, yet this has never stopped her from being like every other girl. When I asked her to be in this picture, she immediately ran upstairs to change. She wanted to wear pink, as well as cover up her arm. I placed Jessica in front of her sister to show how she constantly works to be the one who is seen. If Jessica is around, you know it. I also asked the two sisters to pose for my picture. Jessica instantly did her “sexy” pose as she calls it, while her sister simply sat back and smiled. This picture was taken in the girls play room which was filled from floor to ceiling with Barbies, stuffed animals, and baby dolls. Jessica’s toys included the scantly clothed Barbies because they are “the pretty toys” and her sister more stuffed animals because the dolls had “too much makeup”. While both girls are amazing and sweet, Jessica has always known that she will have to try so much harder to fit in to the norm of society. No one ever had to tell her, she just knew. Her dream is to finish all the surgeries that she has had and still has yet to go so that she can look more like her “pretty toys”.
