Breaking All the Rules

From Juli

Most children have been taught to live appropriately within their gender, and not to go outside of the gender realm. Most parents do not feel that comfortable seeing their children playing with non-gender appropriate toys. I believe that my picture makes a statement about gender reversal in socialization. Girls are taught to play the more submissive role, whereas boys are taught at an early age to take on a more authoritarian role. The picture depicts how either gender can socialize properly in whatever activity they enjoy playing, and should not have to feel uncomfortable playing the non traditional roles. The setting of the picture is a neutral place for both genders to enjoy, whether kicking around a soccer ball, or carrying a baby. I captured my subjects off guard when I took their pictures so I could reveal their true identities and personalities. I believe that the expressions on 17 year old Sigrun's face as well as Michael's reflect their attitudes toward gender bias and role reversal.

i really like this picture because, they really arent any set rules about gender rules. i like to see that men are caring about their family of are taking care of babies, and giving the women a time to enjoy them selves. we have to show that world that it is okay for men to be a Mr. mom, haha because their is nothing wrong with it, they don't lost that tough guy image they are gaining more respect.

I think this picture shows are great perspective that it doesn’t matter what kind of toy a person plays with. I think the background is one of the best parts of the picture because it’s a neutral place for boys and girls to play. I like how this picture is saying that it is odd for a boy to be playing with a doll at the playground, and how the girl is playing with a soccer ball in a dress and with a crown on is also odd. If society is going to judge what a person is going to play with at a playground then maybe we should be judging if a boy or a girl should be playing at the playground at all. I feel that the angle of the picture is even saying that looking at this kind of picture is kind of odd, but people shouldn’t be judging what kids are playing with these days because what real harm is going to come out of a girl playing with a soccer ball or a boy playing with a doll? All in all I think this is a great picture and really has a good meaning behind it.

This is such a great picture. I really like that the people don’t care about being different. The people in this picture don’t let the media dictate who they are and they are not influenced very much by what the media says. I like how the girl in this picture was playing soccer but yet she still had a crown on her head. This shows that she has been influenced by the media but does not let it control her life. The boy in the picture does not look like a wimp; he is just interested in generally more feminine activities. I like how this picture was taken outside because it just shows that they are comfortable with themselves. Their faces are really interesting to look at too because she has an aggressive look on her face and he is looking at the baby very calmly and nurturing. This picture over all was my favorite and it really captured gender reversal in the world.

The picture is a perfect display of the way we are taught to view roles of boys and girls because it is not normal. When you see a girl in a dress and a tiara about to kick a ball you think that's weird, however, it is also accepted because she's doing a more masculine activity. The boy on the other hand, is holding a doll, standing with on arm balanced on his hip like a woman might, this is also weird to society. The only reason that it's weird is because of the media, your parents; basically anybody who has any influence in your everyday life tells you that boys don't play with dolls, and girls don't play sports. Why is that normal?

This picture is quite humorous while also doing its job. I love how the girl is in a dress and a tiara but she looks like if she kicked the ball it would soar the length of a football field. Also the boys face shows that he could have a very feminine side. I love the background because it is so gender neutral. People need to be more accepting of the fact that you can play ball in a dress just as well as a boy and that guys can care for kids just as well as girls.
