The photo represents how society and the media influence young children’s decision making skills. In society today, many people view young boys who skateboard as “punks.” Many times on television shows and movies, the skateboarders are portrayed as the bad kids causing chaos. To this young boy, skateboarding is a hobby that he and his young friends like to do for fun. They are not bad kids looking for trouble. Instead, they are faced with the having to make choices on whether to make good vs. bad decisions daily. Choosing to skateboard can be a fun way to stay away from the trouble. The socialization of gender plays a key factor in these various photos. The young boy in the photo is at an age where the “right” and “wrong” decisions are very crucial in shaping the way he is viewed by society. The photos suggest conflict as one strip cuts into the other in much of the same way as bad influences cut into daily life and making decisions. The two sets of photos represent the innocence and fun of childhood play and the temptation of destructive behaviors exhibited in order to fit in or be cool. As one boy watches his friends spray painting a wall, he struggles with the values he has been taught and his need to be accepted by his peers. The same is true in the next photo with the cigarettes. The background picture of the boy and his friend is faded because he has a blurred vision of what a good friendship is suppose to be like. The word “decisions” is next to the right choices because they are what he knows is right. The word “pressure” is next to the bad decisions because he feels pressure when those events occur. In the last photo, it is not clear whether the boy gives into temptation but suggests his struggle with making good and poor decisions. Perhaps, he is thinking of the consequences of his actions.

I think this photo represents one of the many MAIN influences on how peers can contribute to how you act, feel and what you do. Not just for boys but as well as girls too. Friends play a big role in your life and what choices your friends do usually reflect back onto your own character in some way. The pictures going horizontal represents the good side of having friends whereas, the pictures going vertical represents the pressures a lot of boys face today. The fact that the boy is sort of stand offish while his friends are drawing graffiti means that he knows that its wrong but because today boys are pressured to be “bad” because its fun he doesn’t walk away or tell his friends “hey look this is wrong” he just watches. I think society today is really controlling the fact that you just can’t simply be you without being judged or treated without respect is terrible and it’s only getting worse.
I really like this picture. I think it is a great way to symbollically represent what kids have to face on a day to day basis. Either do the right thing, and be ridiculed, or give in an disreguard your morals. It is a hard decision to make, and most kids end up making the wrong decision, which she does a good job depicting by the blurry film which shows his unclear future.
Not too many talk about the pressures that boys today are faced with. If they aren't "cool", or act a certain way, they're made fun of. Adolence is a learning experience to say the least. You are faced with decisions that will effect your future every day of you life. The boys in the picture look like they are enjoying themselves, being typical guys skateboarding and hanging out. Until the mood starts to change, when his so called "friends" start spray painting public property. The boy looks confused, but seems a bit afraid to say anything. He is afriad that his friends will not think he's cool anymore, and will make fun of him. Then his friend offers him a cigarette, he accepts it awkwardly, so as not to be uncool. He looks at the pack of cigarettes and spray paint and thinks to himself: "Is this what it's like to be cool?"
