The Way You See Yourself

From Cheray

I took my picture of this setting, because most people don't know what goes on during the day in the life of a cheerleader. My picture shows a girl analyzing her body in the mirror, but you can see how skinny she is. My picture also shows girls facing backwards in a bathroom stall, because some cheerleaders are so worried about their appearance that they would harm their bodies by making themselves throw up. I took the picture sitting down because it emphasizes on the girls being on their knees facing the toilet. It also captures the entire point of the girl looking at her stomach and holding her mouth in dissappointment. The point of my picture is what really goes on in girls lives that people don't always see.

There is a really powerful statement being made in this image. I love the angle that this photo was taken from, and believe it did do a good job of emphasizing the girls on their knees in the stalls. However, the first thing that immediately jumped out at me upon scrolling past this photo was the exposed stomach of the girl standing up, looking into the mirror with a look of disdain on her face. It's amazing (not to mention a downright shame) that a girl SO thin and pretty would be holding her mouth like that, in disappointment with that she sees in her reflection. I also liked that you couldn't see her whole face, which may indicate that she's simply one of many who, sadly, struggle with the problem of accepting their own body image. Showing that girl alone would have been enough, but I love that you added to the message being depicted in this photo with the girls in the stalls. It's incredibly sad that a girl would be so pressured to be thin by her peers and the image society that labels as "beautiful" that she would make herself vomit, but that's the case with more than 8 million people in the United States alone suffering from an eating disorder. This issue needs to be brought more to the forefront of society. Young girls who are absolutely beautiful should not be made to feel anything but due to what someone else thinks or says. Overall, I think you really captured the essence of, as you said, "what really goes on in girls lives that people don't always see." That issue being, millions of girls harming their bodies to obtain an unrealistic "ideal" of society's standards. Well done!

This photo is very shocking and makes me feel sick to my stomach. Eating disorders happen behind closed doors and are a very serious subject. I like that this photo puts it in your face and catches your attention. The stocking’s that the girls are wearing under the bathroom stall are bright in color and have wild patterns, which to me illustrates they’re scream for attention. The skinny girl looking in the mirror is wearing a knee brace. I wonder if that injury could have been prevented if she was getting the proper nutrition a young girl needs. You can’t see her face which I believe represents the idea that anyone could be in a similar situation. I don’t know if this really is going on in bathrooms of cheerleading practice but it would not surprise me at all. Physical image has been made so important to these girls by the media and peer pressure that they will do anything to emulate the idea of the “perfect body,” even if it means jeopardizing their health. Girls who do this to their body have psychological disorders that need to be addressed or else they may face serious health consequences. I believe this image was successful in demonstrating the idea that some girls are never satisfied with the way they see themselves.
