Boys and Their Toys
From: Caitlin R.
My photo illustrates gender labels as social demands. The fire trucks, the tractor, the shark, and the race cars all symbolize one thing: toys that boys most commonly play with. There is really no background. I focused on all of the toys because they show the representation between boys and what they are given to interact with. The shark shows aggression which most boys are trained to show. The tractor and the fire trucks represent jobs that boys/men are “supposed” to pursue. You do not see many women driving tractors or fire trucks. Lastly, the race cars show the need for speed guys have. Cars and trucks are important to men but, usually women do not really care how fast their car is or how high it sits off the ground. I chose to keep this picture in color because it shows how these objects are not made in the color pink. They are not feminine what so ever and they were not made to attract girls. Every object in my picture shows people how boys are trained to play with certain toys because of their gender.

While I agree with you to a point, mostly these toys are associated with boys. However, this past weekend we had a block party on my street. We had the fire department come, the girls were every bit as interested as the boys were, they climbed into the truck, sat behind the steering wheel, and stood attentively to the firemen while they spoke about the different tools they had on their truck to help save lives.
This picture also shows that boys toys give them some aspect of what they should grow up to be, for example a fire truck makes little boys want to become a fireman.
These toys are mostly associated with boys. Girls are not as likey to play with these toys and this is shown in many ways. The colors of the toys are mor masculine and dark. No bright colors or pink colors are on the cars because those are not "boy colors." The media used to sell this product is mainly focused at boys because thats what are they are supposed to be more interested in.
these toys represent the types of careers that we expect boys to have. They play with them then the societal ideas of expected norms are drilled into their heads. When we see a woman as a fireMAN we are surprised. because that isnt a choice they were taught to make.
I agree with you that females are not taught at an early age to be firefighters, police officers, mechanics or truck drivers. The jobs that are ideal for men are not as ideal for women. Another point I wanted to come across is the aggression men are taught it all reflects the jobs they pursue.
