Gender Socialization In The Eyes Of A Toddler‏

From: Angel

I took my photo this way because it shows a broad view of gender socialization. The toddler is looking up at the older girls. My photo is showing gender and feminity that starts a very young age. I also took this picture from this angle because the infant is clearly idolizing the younger girls. The black and white photo gives this photo more of a distinguish look and really allows you to focus on the picture itself without any color distractions. This toddler is showing gender typing and gender identification by playing and staying close to the older girls. At this stage of the toddlers life, the toddler knows her type of gender. The toddler is also social learning and following the older girls around and mocking what they do.

I really enjoyed looking at your picture. I think taking it in black and white really emphasized the mood of an almost dreary feeling and it really emphasized the little girl. I think that the little girl being in a dress was important because it showed just how early gender socialization begins. Also the little girl looking up at the older women in a idolizing fashion helps to understand the gender-typed messages these young women are sending to our youth.

I like this photo a lot. I think it displays how much young girls really do look up to older girls. It is obvious that this young girl is taking in and analyzing every word the older girls are saying. I love that although the photo is taken in a neutral black and white color, you can still see the femininity in the young girls dress. I think it accurately displays how early genderization occurs in todays society.

I chose this picture to analyze because I found it to be one of the most powerful pictures on the website. In this picture, there is female toddler with her back facing the camera looking up at young women. This picture is meant to show gender socialization happening at a very young age. The picture is taken in black and white, which I think is meant to draw attention, and make you realize exactly what is going on in the picture, with no other distractions. By just having the black and white, the picture seems more meaningful and able to speak for itself. None of the character’s faces are present in the picture to show that this is not an individual issue that goes on, it happens all over the world everyday, and without thought. The little girl is shown looking up to an older woman, which shows how she idolizes them. She is looking up at them, just how many children look up to their older role models, and people of their gender. The meaning of this gesture is pretty clear-cut, and easy to understand. It represents what a huge role adults play in children’s lives. In the picture, there is not much in the foreground or background, except more women. This could be because the photographer doesn’t want the viewer to be distracted from the meaning. This could also be used to show how it affects every female on a daily basis, and without realizing it. In this picture both of the women’s hands are crossed which is very significant to the meaning of the picture. It shows that the two women are mocking each other, just like the toddler is learning to mock the older women. It also shows how this idea of gender socialization affects older people as well as toddlers, and how gender typing will continue to affect females on a regular basis. The toddler in the picture is well aware of her gender in this photo. She is paying very close attention to what the other women are doing, and learning gender identification from them. This photo is very powerful in showing the cycle of how women are gender socialized and how it occurs at a very young age.

I think this is a great photo showing gender socialization. The little girl looking up to the older girls shows how the younger girl idolizes the older girls. The perspective of the little girl is captured by the angle from which the photo was taken. I think this was a good choice because it portrays how younger children look up to older individuals as role models . Moreover, the older girls are clearly much bigger which gives off the impression that they have power over the little girls thoughts and behaviors. The little girl looks as though she idolizes them and she wants to be them. This photo makes me realize how much of an effect i have on young girls, possibly causing them to mimic my peers and my behavior. Also i think the fact that the picture was taken so that you can not see the older girls heads may resemble that little girls focus on our actions instead of our individual identities. This portrays how young girls view older girls' actions as favorable to society. This photo clearly demonstrates the cycle of how girls determine how they should act based on their gender in today's society.

This picture definitely shows the significance of gender socialization in a child's perception. The little girl in the photo creates the sense that she looks up to all the other girls in the photo, her head looks upward toward them. You cannot see the faces of the teenage girls in the photo which means that the primary focus is on their bodies. You can notice that the bodies of the teenage girls are relatively thin, tall and slender. The black and white color of the photo provides great emphasis on the little girl. she is the foreground of the picture and center focus. Your eyes are immediately drawn to her as you scan upward to see all the other older girls in the picture. This photo represents how toddlers see beauty, looking up to the older, thinner, younger girls, to one day be just like them.

I think this is a striking photograph both in message, and art. The message that I am reading about the socialization of gender in the eyes of a toddler is that the individual role model here is not present. The little girl is looking up to thin, attractive, young women without heads. The little girl is lower in the frame, representing that she has no power in society. She is looking “up” at the young women who have more power than she does. She is surely aspiring to be like them when she grows up. The attractive, thin, young women are role models of femininity.

Women today all tend to dress and act in a certain way. Young girls look up to these older girls in their life starting at a very young age. They will mimic they way the older people in their lives act just as these people are mimicing people that they see in todays media.

I think that this is a really interesting interpretation. It really does show you that girls, at such a young age, are already beginning to obssess about their appearence and location in a social setting.

Looking up, literally and figuratively. We are all role models at all times of our lives to someone else. These women seem to be positive role models to the toddler.
