New Disney Film has a Black Princess

Disney's latest film, The Princess and the Frog, is due to come out in December. Tiana, Disney's first black princess, has raised considerable controversy. Watch the trailer and read this New York Times' article about the controversy. In light of some of the things we've talked about with Mickey Mouse Monopoly what is your opinion of the film?

I think this movie looks like your typical Disney movie trailer. I do like that there is a leading African American female character, but the representation of the fire fly, makes me wonder whether or not the townspeople are supposed to fit the stereotypical "dumb southerners" profile. What impressions are we sending to the youth of this nation? Believe stereotypes sugar coated with "magic" and "beautiful" princesses? I can tell you one thing, my children are not watching most of the Disney films. haha

I think that is some cases people who study these types of films get carried away. I think comparing her name from maddy to momma is two totally different names and is ridiculous that they tried to make this a point to back up their postion. However i do think that the first black princess should have had more air time since the new york times stated she spends most of her time as a frog. I think that she should have been embraced more as a female black princess then a frog.

I remember hearing about this months back on Cnn.com. I can understand why some activists would be rather upset about the first black princess spending the majority of her time on screen as a frog, but some of the other claims are a bit of a stretch. I don't understand why they couldn't find a good black actor to voice the prince, but I don't see the reason why that would create such a stir. It will be interesting to see if Disney makes any changes before its actual release, or if we ever find out if they have done so.

I am happy that Disney has finally made a movie with an African American as the maine character. Before this movie I never really noticed that the white race has played most of the characters in Disney movies. When i saw the trailer for this film i knew right away something was different and then I realized the cartoon characters are African American. It's great that little kids are able to see someone of the same race as them in Disney movies but in this film i do not think the characters play roles that these children can look up to.

I think that Disney went a little too far with this movie. I don't think they thought about what people would say about how they handle the black princesses voice and mannerisms. I also don't think they thought about the consequences of making a dumb southerner firefly. Did they not think people would take offense to this, especially when it's set in New Orleans? I also think that not having a black princess is extremely unfair, apparently Disney doesn't think a black prince is worthy of a role yet.

I think people read way to much into the sterotpyes of african americans. I believe that it is a lose, lose situation for disney. If they don't have an african american female as the main character then they are racist... if they do have an african american princess people are just going to point out all the negative and racist things about the movie.

I have never really noticed before that all of the main characters in Disney movies are white. I don’t think that people should be making such a big deal about Disney making their first African American main character.

I think this is a positive step for Disney to include an African American princess. However Disney is notorious for sending out stereotypical messages to children so i have no doubt this movie will not accurately represent African Americans. It will most likely perpetuate false images as do many of Disney's movies such as Aldan,or Beauty and the Beast .

I can admit that in some Disney movies the physical appearence of the female characters can be suggestive. However, as far as the controversy over race in this movie I don't think that it was Disney's intention to stereotype the African-American culture.

I think that it is time that Disney finally has an African American leading female character. I think that it will be a positive thing for little girls to see a variety in Disney movies. I do think that they went a little too dramatic in making such a big deal about being in New Orleans and I dont agree with how the fire fly represents a traditionally African American male. I think that if Disney does make a racially diverese movie, they should leave out all the stereotypes of that race. It could help deal with the problem of race in out country.
