Complex

From: Kelly
I chose this pose to demonstrate how men are less likely to know what to get a baby than women. Women usually take care of newborns- changing diapers, feeding, and bathing. Men are more known as the workers that bring home money in the household, rather than the care-taker. The tee shirt he is wearing shows his laid back personality. The confusion and scared look in the male’s eye is demonstrating how clueless he realizes he is. The different products show how many choices there are in baby nipples and bottles. The rows of items double the confusion this male has to deal with. Not only does he have to know what to buy, he has to know what brand and what size and what type to buy. He is not looking at the camera because he is so focused on the items in front of him. Looking at the items in his hand show his thought process on which item may be the best. The reason he is holding just the top of a bottle in one hand and the whole bottle and top in the other illustrates how he is not sure if he needs the whole thing or just the top. He is overwhelmed in his expression, in the items he is holding, and in his surroundings.

Unlike the past, men today do many kinds of housework for women including taking care of infants or children. However, they still have less knowledge about infant care than women do as this picture illustrates. As Kelly said, the young man in this picture is not sure which item he needs for an infant. We can only see half of his face, which implies incompletion of his attention to an infant. His face is full of confusion and frustration about his lack of knowledge. The yellow wall, which is vivid, indicates the infants’ section in the store and with nipples and bottles. Also, the wall demonstrates as an obstacle he has to overcome for now to choose an item for an infant.

I would have to say that I disagree with what Kelly is saying; men are just as capable of taking care of children as women are. The reason I’m saying this because there are certain elements of the photo and what Kelly is saying shows men are being stereotyped. With the photo; the person in it is a bad choice, he is too young and doesn’t appear to be a father. Another element in the photo is the man’s expression; he looks as if he never saw a baby bottle or nipple before. As well in the photo he is only looking at what’s in his hand and not at the rows in front of him or anything else. This is saying that he knows absolutely nothing about babies; which could mean he is not a father of any kind.
Going back to what Kelly is saying about the photo, not all men are going to be this confused about how to take care of a child. Unlike in the photo, men know there are different types of bottles and nipples for babies but don’t know which ones they may need. However this is changing, as society begins to change more men are learning what babies need. In Defying Gender Roles in the text; under flexibility begins at home, parents different teaching about gender roles is making a big difference today. Men are learning what they need to do to take care of infants just as good as women.

In today’s society men are more likely to be involved in their kids’ lives. I actually don’t disagree a 100% but I do think some men are stepping up and showing that their woman aren't only house wives, but also equal as them. As the picture shows a young man is looking at the items confused about what to purchase, but honestly, that man looks very young and he might just be shopping for a baby sister we don’t know exactly who he’s purchasing it for. Some men are incapable of going and buying baby items, but there are some that are capable. The picture definitely shows that he’s at an infant aisle due to the color of the wall and the nipples and bottles that he is holding. Men are being stereotyped because of the past, but I think that things have definitely changed since the past and men and woman are equal in something’s such as housework.
