Female Athletes and Beauty Standards

Are female athletes challenging the limited definitions of female beauty? Check out this article in The New York Times about basketball star, Brittney Griner.  What do you think?  Are there other female athletes that you think are challenging the beauty standard?

I hope these female athletes challenge today's beauty standards. Who's to say women should look a certain way or define standards of what sexy should be. Each woman is beatiful in their own way and because she is athletic and amazingly good at basketball shouldn't indicate that she is a lesbian. Even if she were, people should not judge according to her athletic ability and physical features! More women should challenge today's beauty standards I support individialism and unique beauty for all women.

These female athletes absolutely challenge the beauty standards that are set for females. They are the complete opposite of the pretty skinny models all over the magazines. These athletes are more of a woman than those girls they put on the front covers. They are big and muscular but yet completely beautiful. I think that it is amazing to finally see women who stand in the spot light for more than the fact that they are pretty. Venus and Serena Williams are also examples of other female athletes are that changing the beauty standards. These females are giving the message that being bigger and muscular is much prettier than skinny and unhealthy looking. I love this message and I hope that there are more females who find their way to the spot light to help further this message.

Every female is beautiful in their own way. Female athletes are just as beautiful as a model on the cover of a magazine. I think athletes are changing the beauty standards and can make a big impact on our society. It will give young girls hope and a positive message. You don’t need to be super skinny and have the perfect body to be beautiful. Beauty goes far beyond a persons "looks". Be happy with who you are and be unique!

Female athletes are the women out of typical stereotypes. They represent women whose value is set on their confidence, bravery and talent unlike super skinny models whose image is set as 'being girly' and 'beautiful'. I think Brittney Griner is a very talented basketball player and she should be much appreciated for the game she plays rather than her personality. It is really immature to call her a lesbian and decide her sexuality based on personality. Female athletes have broken the stereotype that women should act delicate and thereby also reduced the pressure many women experience to look beautiful. They have set new meaning for beauty and here it is referred as being competitive and and being a winner.

Ms.Griner is challenging female standards of beauty. She is not the ideal beauty figure in the media, but in reality she is unique. A person that is always unique is seen beautiful to people in public. She should continue to be who she is and keep the appearance she is often comfortable with. Because it will help other women overcome their insecurities that the media has insallted in them. Female athletes really help people in general to see the bigger picture that beauty is unique unlike the veiws coming from the media.

There seem to only be 1 or 2 female athletes per generation to ever make any kind of remark, and it is usually because they are different from their team-mates. They are either "too manly" and they are called lesbians and even compared to men or too pretty and feminine too be taken seriously. I feel like sports are one of societies big discriminators. Starting with the word athletes, you have to say female athlete otherwise it is assumed to be a male.I really hope that as more talented female athletes come out sports can become more equal and more importantly avoid judging the book by the cover, assuming that pretty girls cant be good sports.

Female athletes definately challange todays beauty standards. Since the beauty standards we all see in the media today are mostly determined by men it makes sense that the muscular not so dainty figure of many women athletes do not fit in this category. Men are intimidated by women equal to them in strength because stength equals power.

These women are definately chanllenging today's beauty standards and I think it's amazing. This gives young girls a role model to look up to that isn't an extremely thin supermodel. I hope they get more attention in the media for doing this so females everywhere can feel more comfortable with their own bodies.
