From Gabi
Self esteem is a big issue when it comes to teenagers, especially teenage girls. This is a picture of my sister 15 year old step sister, Nina. Every day I watch her cover her face in make-up in order to look, as she says, “presentable.” The pressure to look good while growing up is something that most girls struggle with. Teen girl’s self esteem can be affected in many ways and girls will alter anything to make themselves feel better. The media is a major influence on young girls about how they should look and be presented. Most girls spend time buying new clothes and new make-up products because the media tells them that it’s the only way they will look good. In the picture her face is not fully shown, and this represents not knowing one’s self. Most girls in their teen years do not know who they really are, and are trying to find out while struggling with their self esteem. In the compact reflection you cannot see her face, either, because even looking in the mirror she does not know who she really is. Also, the compact in her hand is the most focused point in the picture, while everything else is slightly blurry. This is because when a girl is struggling with her self esteem her main focus is the product that is helping her feel better about herself. In addition, the slight darkness in the reflection can show how young girls may be depressed because they have low self esteem. The pressure of looking good from peers and the media can make a girl feel overwhelmed with darkness, as though she is not good enough.

This picture is good because it shows how make-up is such a huge influence in a girls confidence and self-esteem. Young teenage girls are so vulnerable when it comes to the media and what it says about beauty and perfection. Everyday they are thrown these standards that they must reach in order to be considered beautiful or perfect. When in reality beauty comes from within. External beauty is temporary, internal beauty is forever! :)
