There is no She in He

From: Remi
As you look at this man, many don’t wonder why there is no woman doing his same job and I walk around to see if there in fact are any doing this job at this site at all. After a brief talk with this gentleman, I find they only have one woman working for this entire company. This commercial company he works for is considerably large with many workers but at this present 2011 date they only have one woman working for them. This might not seem odd to the average person because many people are not use to seeing many female electricians and so it seems like a norm. However, this occupation has once again proven that gender is a huge deal and due to our roles as men and women, we don’t go into certain fields. These gender roles are socially constructed and learned as well. I’m assuming that many women don’t choose to be electricians not because of it being a manly occupation but because they are not interested in doing it. However, some may want to work in this type of field but subconsciously know that it is mainly a man’s field and would feel out of place if they chose to do so. Even though since the 1950’s women have started working almost more than men now they still are problems at the workplace that hold them back. If there were to be women working at this job site or as electricians, she might still be seen as incompetent due to women not having certain strengths or actually ability to do a job. Also, women may fear that since being an electrician is majority men that she may have to deal with sexual harassment on the daily which would make work uncomfortable. Another reason we may not see as many in this occupation is that even if they tried to work for these companies they may not get hired due to them being female after being interviewed or just from their resume. There are many reasons to why there are no women in this industry or why many women don’t even want to be. Finally, I like how the things we can tell about this man from the picture. His stance shows he has some power and his outfit shows he’s working in cold and hazardous conditions. In conclusion, there really isn’t any she in this man or this picture at all.

I think this is a great photo that shows occupational segregation. This photo looks like an example of horizontal segregation. Construction jobs are definitely overstaffed mainly by men. If a person were to be walking by a construction site and saw a woman worker they would be very likely to do a double take, because it is so uncommon.

Sad, but true, women are limited to some careers and occupations because of the certain factors you mentioned in your article. Construction is an excellent example to describe gender segregation in the workplace because women in this day and age are not as heavily encouraged to do construction type work because they are told that they are incapable or the job would not be enjoyable because they may be harassed. I believe if we changed that mentality, then women will be able to feel empowered to do construction work and not be antagonized and fearful of harassment.

This photo is great letting people know that some jobs are still mostly same sex. Some men look down on women saying they are not strong enough to do a man’s job they don’t have what it takes to get the job done. I ask some of my male friends why they think this is so. They all said because women are weak. They were so wrong I know lots of women who can do as much as any male can in sometimes even more this photo shows how some people think women can’t do a man’s job in I think they are all wrong.

This is a great picture that shows occupational segregation still goes on with jobs that we look at to be more Manly jobs. Especially with construction jobs, if a woman was working on this job, someone would do a double take when walking by because it is not common to see a woman doing construction! I know when I see a woman handling a large machine picking up wood or steal, I do a double take, because it is so uncommon to see! This is still going on today in more jobs that are more staffed by men and women are limited to some careers because of the segregation and what we view as a more He or She job.

This is an awesome photo to capture occupational segregation. I think that it is pure discrimination. If a woman has the same qualifications as a man, she should let her do thejob
