I Wish

From: Jessica

I titled my photo "I Wish." My picture is of a young teenage girl who is looking into her mirror from down below showing that the models  are more powerful than her. She is wearing dark clothes; this shows how depressed she feels because she does not look like these models. Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail to show her low-self esteem and "I don't care" attitude. The pictures surround her reflection in the mirror to represent that she bases her everyday life comparing herself to these models. Not only does she compare herself to the models, but she also lives her life based around the way these models look. That is why I had her face in a circle shape on the mirror. I took the picture with her sitting on the floor in a hunch position to show she is not strong and confident. I also had her head tilted back to show she feels helpless and not good enough compared to the models. She is looking at the photos of the models in a worried, clueless look. I named my photo, "I Wish," to give an idea of what is running through her mind as she views the photos. She wishes everyday she would wake up and look like a model. I included the mirror also because for most people, we look in a mirror once every day. This relates to how media affects us, it's a daily issue for everyone. Women never feel good enough; the media only makes it worse. Women look through magazines at models that have been painted and fixed on the computer. That's not who they really are, but its who women want to be. Women undergo painful surgeries and extreme procedures that risk their lives just to look like women in the media. The media has a very large impact on women and their confidence.

Title of Photo: “I Wish”- Jessica

I feel that this photo (“I Wish”) is a great representation of this idea which the media puts into young girls’ minds: The idea that in order to be seen as “beautiful” or “attractive” and get attention from others, you must have this “perfect body type”. Every day, girls are exposed to images of these women such as celebrities and models. This girl in the photo probably feels very insecure because she doesn’t look like the thin, glamorous women she has pasted on her mirror. Many young girls who see these images, don’t understand why they don’t look like this and a lot of the time, they adopt an eating disorder which accompanies their low self-esteem.

This photo symbolizes everything a young girl today wants to be. Just the title poses a problem for teen girls. The way the women look in the photos is not normal and MOST girls will never look like that. Because of this, so many girls are going to extreme lengths to fit in with these so-called beautiful women. The way society expects girls to look leads many young women to having eating disorders, self-esteem problems, and even depression. Girls should realize they are beautiful just how they are and they shouldn't have to torture themselves and their bodies to please everyone else who tells them how they should look. This is a great photo to show what girls look up to, and having it covering a mirror also may symbolize how girls can't see how beautiful they really are because they are suffocated by these images of these flawless women.

This photo is a great symbol of how girls, in this case literally look up to models for their body image. In this photo you see a young girl who has likely made a this collage of several models with ideal bodies according to society. The collage is taking up a lot of physical space in the photo suggesting the amount of space this idea of having this type body takes a hold of this young girls mind. Her face is only taking up a very small portion of the photo suggesting that she herself feels small and inferior next to these women. Many young girls today look up to women with body types like this and do not realize the consequences of going to such extremes to create this body. In most cases, these bodies aren't even real. With the help of photo shop, the women in the photos are made to be skinnier, have longer legs and torsos, and enlarged breasts. The dark lighting in the photo could symbolize the dark feelings of their own self image that many girls adopt because of these photos. All together, this photo can symbolize the feelings of many young girls as well as the naive thoughts that they have.

This picture is very intriguing; it shows how girls are trained to better their appearance before they even hit puberty. And what even worse is that they are planning for wrinkles before they even reach eighteen. Our society has socialized to think that we always need to be perfect and looking old is a terrible thing.
