The Meaning of Beauty

From: Fantasia

These two ladies are sisters. As you can see, both of their confidence levels are completely different. The girl in the pink is standing up tall and looking directly at the camera. She has more confidence and is more comfortable with her body. Her hair is out and she is smiling. Whereas, the girl in the grey is looking at her sister, her hair is up and she seems to be a little uncomfortable with her body and showing skin. She is a little bigger than her sister, and that is why she is a little awkward. The colors also play a role in this picture. Brighter colors represent confidence, and as you can tell by her posture and her slim tight dress she is indeed confident. When someone wears a dark color it kind of just blends in with everything, no one really notices them and they most likely won’t get as much attention as a person with brighter colors would. Overall this photo represents how in today’s society the meaning of beauty has changed. I think beauty today means to be very skinny, wealthy and following your “gender rules”. No one can be themselves anymore because there is so many people in the world that judge others for being a little different. If you think about it, the girl in the grey isn’t really “big”. She just feels like her size isn’t good enough and wants to be more like her sister or like the models in the magazines. Her sister (pink) isn’t as skinny as the models you see on TV either but she is content with her body and doesn’t feel the need to change. In fact she knows that being as skinny as the lady’s you see on TV or in magazines is a little unrealistic.

This is a great example of how girls strive to embody the “beauty” that we see in the media. While magazines, television shows, and movies play a huge role in this, I believe that friends play an even bigger role. This is where it all starts and these are the people you see day in and day out. The sister in the forefront is exuding confidence by the way she is standing and smiling at the camera, as if she is modeling. However, her sister appears to be envious because she is gazing at her sister as if she’s thinking, “Why can’t I look like that?” She’s reaching across her body because she doesn’t feel comfortable, especially beside her sister. The pink dress she is wearing is symbolic of how “hot” she is and it really draws your eyes to her in particular. On the other hand the black dress is very plain and doesn’t conform to her body.

The essay attached to this photo makes some great points and shows great symbolism. Although both girls are beautiful, one is more confident than the other simply because she sees herself differently than most girls that age do. While most girls are self conscious and always looking at other girls comparing themselves. The girl in the pink however, is not comparing herself to her sister. Something else that I think symbolizes her overall confidence is that she is taking up more physical space in the picture and is therefore seen as more powerful. Beauty in a sense is a form of power because women can use their beauty in some instances to get what they want. Although this is limited in the work world, in the media and fashion industry, the better you portray what an ideal woman is, the better your career will be. The sister in the black dress represents most of American teenagers today. Feelings of envy and insecurity are written all over her face. Her insecurity is further shown through her body language, by crossing her arms and keeping her body secluded in her already revealing outfit. All together this photo shows us feelings that girls feel everyday, whether is be confidence or insecurity.

This photo is a great example, how some females might be influenced by their friends, family, and media. The angle of the photo pointing straight forward demonstrates confidence from the girl wearing the pink dress. The girl in the black dress is fitting in background not really standing out her pose and overall appearance reflects how she feels about her beauty. It’s very easy to tell that the girl in the pink dress likes to stand out and be noticed, more so than her sister. It’s obvious the girl in the black dress is looking at her sister noticing that they are not similar.

This photo is a great example of the stress that young girl's feel in society today. You can tell that the one girl has low self-esteem and looks as if she envies her friend's looks and confidence, which she cannot find within herself. The media plays a huge role in how young girls feel about themselves, especially on the outside. You can tell the one girl is uncomfortable and she has her arm in front of her stomach, as if she is trying to cover her body up because she's embarrassed. This photo shows how important it is for society to reinforce inner beauty instead of outer beauty so that young girls don't feel so pressured to be "perfect".
