The Sports Room
From Madison
This is a picture of my thirteen year old brother's room. It shows some of the gender scripts that come with being a male. First, the colors of the room are blue, yellow, and white. Blue is associated more with being a male's color. Yellow and white are more neutral colors. There isn't any colors associated with being a female such as pink or purple. Also, the room is decorated with sports. There is a Washington Redskin blanket, pillow, helmet, license plate on the wall, poster on the wall, and Super Bowl banner on the wall. Growing up as a male, it is taught to be interested in sports, whether playing them or watching them, sports are a part of most males lives. There are several sports trophies and sports ribbons by the lamp next to the bed. This is an example of males having sports as part of their every day life. There's a football on the bedroom floor as well which is more of a boy's toy than a girl's toy. Boys like to be active and play with balls whereas girls like to play with dolls. There is a poster set up of a Hummer which would be an ideal car for a male rather than a female. The Hummer gives a sense of masculinity because it is so big of a vehicle which shows dominance, aggressiveness, and power. The Hummer comes from the military which shows a sign of strength. Dominance, aggressivness, power, and strength are all characteristics males like to be classified under. Above the bed, there is a LeBron James poster who is one of the best basketball players in history. It represents as a role model for younger boys. They want to grow up and be athletic, rich, famous, just like how he is. All of these characteristics of this room are examples of the social role theory. The social role theory states that women and men live different lives according to society's stereotypes of men and women. Every aspect of this room conforms to the social role theory of growing up as a boy.
