G.I. Jane‏

From Diana
This picture shows how girls aren’t as pressured as boys to conform to society norms. In this picture, two best friends are dressed in attire from opposite ends of the spectrum, but are both still accepted by society. The girl on the left is dressed in a military uniform, which is seen as more of a male role, while the girl on the right represents a more female role by wearing a girly ensemble. Even though the girl on the left isn’t conforming to society norms, no one is calling her gender identity into question; whereas if a male dressed in feminine attire his gender identity would more than likely be questioned. Both girls are posing for the picture and have joyful expressions on their faces. This shows that they are both comfortable in how they are dressed because society doesn’t put as much pressure on girls to conform to social norms.

I agree that this picture does go along with the idea that girls are able to play with gender roles. There is not anything necessarily wrong with the fact she had on a men’s military uniform. But what is wrong would’ve been if it were a male wearing the dress. In today’s society men who walk around wearing women’s clothing are often victims to violence, especially in urban areas. I think that is wrong that gay men are not able to experiment with the roles., even though when I do see it, it catches me off guard. I may not like they are doing it but at the end of the day it is their right to express themselves even if society doesn’t agree, or approve.

I agree that women and girls in our society have more leeway in what is considered acceptable however I could not help but notice that the woman in uniform appears to be wearing makeup and in that way is conforming to what is the social norm.
