Like Mother, Like Daughter‏

From: Gabrielle
There are many ways children and adolescents learn certain gender roles, stereotypes and scripts. As the media tends to play a huge role in displaying how a female should act and how a male should act, parents and other “older” role models such as siblings and other same-sex family members also have a big influence on children. This collage is an example of how a child observes and takes cues from her mother or other adult figure starting at an early age. As you can see, this little girl is mimicking the act of preparing for a day or night out. Most typical women feel that there is a need for make-up and other feminine products in their every-day look in order to feel socially accepted by not only males, but also other females. When a woman appears to be polished, she gains more self-confidence and more positive attention from co-workers, family members, etc.
The angle of the top left pose in the collage portrays someone looking up to the mother. In this case, it is her daughter that examines her every move. In the top right, you can see the little girl watching her mother through the mirror. The angle of the shot still shows how she is looking up to her mother. In the two bottom shots, the little girl cakes on makeup to feel beautiful just as she views her mother. You can also see in all of the shots, almost everything except the subject and the make-up is blurred out. This symbolizes the power of beauty in women’s culture.

The angling of the individual photos is a fantastic way to depict how the little girl “looks up” to her mother, almost literally given the position of the photos. It helps to understand how much of an influence older women have in their daily actions to younger girls, no matter how indirect the action may be. While the action of the mother putting on makeup does not directly affect the young girl, it is understood by her daughter that is an action taken on by women, and thus she must perform it as well. The blurriness of both backgrounds and foregrounds allow the eye to zero-in on the subjects and makeup. This may also imply a woman’s primary focus is their beauty.
