In
this picture, I captured the codes of gender by taking a photo of Caroline, a
young girl wearing an apron, and holding cleaning supplies and a mop in her
hands. By showing a young girl in a kitchen ready to clean, it symbolizes
gender stereotyping.
In our textbooks we read a lot about
gender roles, and women being housewives was a large part of their roles. Women
always being the ones to cook, clean, and care for their children was the
gender norm. In this photo it captures a child following the social norm of a
women at a young age because she is located in the kitchen and has cleaning
supplies ready in hand.

I found that this specific picture is an excellent demonstration of how our society and culture has had a divide when it comes to gender and roles each sex should perform. Based on the concept of “The Two Cultures of Childhood,” I feel as though this example of a young girl holding cleaning products is to emphasize just how much of this taught behavior is expanding in our society within young girls and boys. It’s as if the girl in this photograph is proud to be holding the cleaning products because she knows that this is one of the few duties she must uphold as a female in our culture and society. This learned behavior that women should be the housekeepers is completely a taught gender role stereotype. I love how this image has such simple elements but such depth in the meaning behind it as well.
This photo is set up in an interesting manner. We as an audience are, in a way, looking up to the girl . "We" view her as the ideal young lady. She houses the qualities that the stereotypical stay at home housewife would embrace. The fact that the photo does not include the little girl's head in the frame stimulates an abnormal upsetting feeling. It reveals the hypothetical veil the blinds society from realizing that little girls like this aren't allowed to make their own decisions of interest. The are blindly, and somewhat brainlessly, lead to believe they somehow enjoy and prefer sexist activities, like cleaning, which magically deposit them into their proper gender roles.

This color picture of a young girl reminds me of a young girl playing dress up. She had watched her mother properly prepare for cleaning the house on a Saturday morning. She is dressed up covered in her protective garment (apron), and has all the necessary tools to make a house clean. This picture clearly is representative of the gender roles that society label for females. At a second glance of this photo, I would say that this young girl is ready for Halloween, where she has dressed up like a house wife ready to clean.
I like that in this photo you can't see the girl's face. It symbolizes that women are seen as objects that serve others and have no personality of their own. She has grown up learning that this is the way that things are. She has learned gender roles at a young age. This is troubling, that girls still think they can only clean and do housework, because it is commonly seen. It is difficult to unlearn gender roles and gender stereotyping.
