Beaten Belle

from: Hope

Domestic violence is real. When in a situation like domestic violence, sometimes it feels like you don’t even have a voice. This picture symbolizes the Disney character Belle. Little girls and little boys are often told the “sugar coated” truth behind bullying, domestic violence and even abusive language. When you were little you may have often heard if a boy picks on you it just means he likes you. I chose this photo to represent how sugar coated children’s media and stories can be. I chose a black background to represent darkness and fear. The black and white photograph shows a tiny bit of color to show that most of her life is dull and dark while there is very seldom some color. The background is open and there is nothing else in the shot. Brittany is in the center of the frame to focus in that she is the main object in the photo. I chose Brittany to look into the camera because I wanted the viewer to get a sense of helplessness in her eyes. The tape on her mouth represents that she doesn't have a voice, just like many of the disney characters. Her shirt is lower cut and showing her shoulders to represent vulnerability and to show how she is viewed as a sex object. The paint brush is there to reveal the truth under her skin. The left side of Brittany’s face has makeup on to cover up what she actually looks like. Belle is with a monster. The Beauty and the Beast can be seen as an innocent children movie but there is a deeper meaning behind it as well. In the movie, the Beast locks Belle in a cellar and gets rid of her dad. The Beast tells Belle that she will not come out until she eats with him. Many people in domestic violent situations make excuses for their loved ones and refuse to see them for the Beast they are just as Belle did.

This photograph has a deep meaning to it, it explains domestic violence very well. Domestic violence is dark and hidden, know one wants to talk about it. Just look at her hair for example, it almost blends in with the background. Its dark, this could be a symbolization of how she feels. Another great element is the tape over her mouth, how its only covering half of if. She wants to be heard but know one will listen or how shes scared to speak.

Brittany is a great, symbolic representation of Belle's life and domestic violence. Although the pitch black background resembles fear and darkness, it also resembles frustration and the silent yet desperate need for a way out. The right side of Brittany's face reflects the counterforce of romantic relationships and family because of the red tape over her eye and the black tape over her mouth. The tape proves that cultural scripts still remain because it reinforces the traditional roles: being a mother, caring, loving, polite, abiding by the needs of her husband or partner, and so forth. She is not allowed to speak for herself but to conform to whatever everyone else says to her, about her, and for her. She is supposed to choose romance over success, motherhood over education. The left side of her face with the paint brush over her eye shows that she may have a great plan for her life, but cannot reveal it due to fear and the pressure of social acceptance. Her mouth remains closed because she still fears rejection. Brittany is strictly dependent on the ways of these cultural scripts that she cannot seem to find a sense of independence.
