Another possible hate crime was reported yesterday. Many reports have talked about this case as a race-based hate crime. However, I haven't seen any discussions of this event as a gender-based hate crime. Rape activists encourage people to think about rape and sexual assault as hate crimes against women. Does it matter that in this case some of the people who have been charged are women? Can a member of a group commit a hate crime against another member of the same group?

I can't even believe something like this would happen. I am sickened by this. It's clearly a racist crime and it's sad.
Wow, I need to start being more aware of my surroundings. I am way too trusting. I do think a person could hate their own social group enough that they could commit a hate crime against that person. If a person hates himself or herself so much for how they were born or who they’ve become, they could strike out in hate at another in the same social category because of how that person is a reminder of their own hate for their own social group. This might be extreme, but so is this case.
I don't believe it matters in this case. from what I read it didn't matter that she was a woman it mattered that she was black. that is a different social group. and yes one member can commit a hate crime against another of the same group, especially if they are "against" their group. they may be a member but they could not be the "ideal" person for that group. in this case, which is clearly horrific, maybe these woman should be treated much more harsh because it a woman on woman crime. this is very sad, very very sad. down to the core, one human against another is horrific enough.
It is torture just reading so I can't imagine what the young lady had to go through. Women can easily be just as violent as men. I don't think it matters that they are women, hatred has no preference. I have come across women that have so much anger against other women with little reason or none. I can't explain it and sometimes you can't reason with it.
first of all i want to say i am amazed by her strength. i would've been paralyzed by how scared and violated i felt. Those people are sick and twisted. I dont see how people can hate people so much. I understand that there are difference amongst us but bottom line, we are all the same. So if you hate someone else that much i think you need to look in the mirror first. I hope they all are prosocuted to the fullest.. they deserve to be in jail.
As I was reading through the comments on the link that were left after the article, I find myself questioning how someone could say that this wasn't at least in part racially motivated. The fact that they used the "N"-word and events that have been occuring nationwide, my mind automatically drifts toward race. Personally, it doesn't matter to me what the motivation was it was still a heinous act that should never have happened to anyone regardless of their social location.
I have never heard of anything so horrible. I don't understand how people could think that way. They are sick in the head. It makes sense for the police to say it was a racist crime, but I don't think they would even think about it being a gender issue. If it is all woman I'm guessing they just don't think they could do such a thing to a man because woman think men are a lot stronger and woman could be weaker. All in all, it's a horrible thing to do to anyone, man or woman.
Without a shout of a doubt I believe this is a race based crime. Why? Three white WOMEN and a white man kidnapped this women, not to mention they repeatedly refered to her as a "N". If it were at all gender based, than the women certainly wouldn't have been involved. This is sickening. Here women are trying to promote women's rights and prevention against racial and sexual hate crimes and yet these sickos do this. Regardless of the motivation, this is just a crime that cannot go ignored.
I don't think this young woman thought that the people she thought were her friend would betray her in this manner. Yes I do feel women can commit hate crimes against other women, it's done often. In this case it's clear that these women participated and inflicted pain on this young woman. The fact that she is of another race adds to the magintude of it being a hate crime. From the account of what happened they made it clear that she was on the receiving end because of her race. This is very tragic.
What is this world comming to? I think this is very distrubing because I was taught blacks and whites are not different in the eyes of god.It is just there skin color its what is inside of them that counts not whats outside of them.
I do not think that rape and sexual asssult as hate crimes against women because men get raped and sexual assault against. You think of rape as women getting rape what about men? It does matter that in this case some of the people are women because most women are the ones are being raped or sexuality assaulted but I am torn against the issue on the other hand I beleive that women could be to blame.
As i read some of my peers blogs, the fact that she is a women just to lighten the problem when it so much bigger than that. SHE's black. We haven't come as far as we all thaught everything Civil Rights (icluding everyone who faught with them)faught for has been dust under somones rug and soon to be forgotten about. THEN WHAT?!
Who the fuck are these people?! These are the people that should be taken out of the gene pool, but not before getting the same torture from some big, black, white hating, angry people that would like nothing more then to hurt some racist white folk. i dont believe in cruel and unusual punishment, but those people deserve it. Their punishment should be to be dropped of in detroit or Harlem with nothing but signs that say, "I hate N*&$@*" just like in Die Hard, the movie. That should be their punishment.
Yes a member of a group can committ a hate crime agaisnt a person in the same group. Rape is nothing sexually it is usually about power and control and showing who has it. The problem when someone comitts a hate crime agaisnt someone of the same group is it just makes it harder to prove that you are being treated unfairly. Isn't that why you did the hate crime because you were sick of the way you were being treated. Than why do one.It just makes it that much harder to prove the unjustice that is being done to you, and like that person wasn't going through the same thing. If everyone reacted the way these people did nothing would ever be sloved as much as just adding fuel to the fire.
