Babie Girl -- Pretty in Pink?

from: Amanda

Media and toy selection obviously contribute to the socialization of gender in children. Toys can insinuate preferred activities and future roles to children. The vacuum cleaner and the baby doll are both examples of "female" or "girl" toys. The vacuum could imply a life of cleaning ahead. The baby doll is used to teach the children how to be mothers. Look at the commercial and the dolls on top of the TV. The commercial is based around fashion (i.e. the purses) and the dolls are all dressed in pink or yellow. Colors such as pink and yellow and fashion accessories such as purses or tiaras are deemed as "girl" interests in our society. Gender typed clothing and accessories guarantee gender-appropriate treatment. Both of the children in this photo are obviously girls. I did this to reinforce the pattern of same sex groups during play. Children tend to play with same sex peers and reject items, ideals, and symbols of the opposite sex by the age of two. The girls are faced away from the camera. This is to demonstrate the suggestion that socializing gender in children is stripping them of their actual identities. Girls who aspire to be more than princesses and mommies are looked down upon or shunned in our society.

i would have to totally agree and i feel as though this should not be the way that society looks at the socialization of a boy or a girl......everyone hould be free to play how theyy want in any manner they wish without being looked down upon or judged by their actions by another just like them......this is a serious issue that should be takin into consideration by society a second look should be taken in the way boys and girls are expected to act we must all be ourselves as individuals.
