From Katelyn:
At eleven years old, Cheyenne, a beautiful biracial young girl is uncomfortable in her own skin. Girls of different races and ethnicities often strive to look more like the norm, lighter skin, straighter hair and thin. Rather than accepting their differences and embracing their beauty they straighten their hair, use light makeup, and obsess over the curves they should be proud of. The mirror in the picture is square, representing a square box of normalcy that Cheyenne strives to fit in. The angle of the picture is relevant because it shows her beautiful lock of curls that she is not happy with and wants to be straight. The picture shows her seeing her reflection with a bright light shining down on her to say that she looks into a mirror and has a constant reminder of her differences compared to her peers. Girls are under such pressure from adolescence on and they are constantly reminded of their “imperfections” but really, what is perfect? There is no one “normal look” but unfortunately society has placed stereotypes on looks that negatively influences the self-esteems of girls every day.

I like the idea of using the mirror as a box symbolizing society that she is trying to fit into. It is hard to be comfortable in your own skin when what is viewed as beautiful does not represent your ethnicity.
I think that this picutre is telling us that women must change to look like the women in the media. Naturally we dont wake up in the morning and look like the beautiful women. We must do things like put on makeup and straighten pur hair. I think that fact that she is so young is a good point to make. because these girls are picking up on what it means to be beautiful very early in age. I think the media images of women are a very bad influence on young women. Because the girl in the photo at only eleven is already trying to be someone else.
I liked how you took the picture from a certain angle. it actually made me think about it.
